Measuring Success: Crushing Your Goals in 2017

January 6, 2017

Accomplishing a task takes more than just writing it on the calendar. For most, a goal can be just a simple task of completing a work assignment or saving enough money to go on that much needed vacation. Think of a goal as something that you wish to achieve in a certain amount of time. But in order to be successful, there's much more preparation than one might think. Ranging from losing 20 pounds in a year, to buying a new house; everyones goals and how they get there are never the same.

At the start of the year, I ask everyone to fill out a Kazam Goal Setting Worksheet. These worksheets are designed to pull out what someone wants to achieve 5 years down the road and from there, we build. Be S.M.A.R.T.

Specific - YES "a 300# back squat" NO "a new back squat PR"

Measurable - YES "20 Unbroken Double Unders" NO "Unbroken Double Unders"

Achievable - YES (if you have yet to do 3 unbroken double unders) "20 Unbroken Double Unders" NO "200 Unbroken Double Unders"

Relevant - YES (creating a goal for a PR Fran time) "21 Unbroken Pull-ups" NO "1 RX Rope Climb" - while still good, totally irrelevant to what you want to accomplish

Time Bound - YES "21 unbroken pull-ups by December 1, 2017" NO "21 unbroken pull-ups this year"

As mentioned earlier, start with the end in mind. WHAT do you want to accomplish? This is your end goal. Within this WHAT you will also need to answer the WHY, HOW, WHEN, and WHO which is why answering the WHAT first is so important. The WHAT is your VISION and 5 year goals. Describe the ultimate version of yourself. Where do you see yourself in 5 years inside and outside the gym? Where will the gym take you both physically in the gym and outside the gym? Maybe your goals are associated with the gym, maybe they're not. How and where would you spend your time? How will you know when you achieved your ultimate self?

WHY do you want to accomplish this? This is your PURPOSE.

HOW can I accomplish these goals? Your sub-goals – 1 year and 90 day goals will be apart of the HOW. This is the process you will be taking to reach your 5 year goals, so these are just as important as the WHY.

WHEN do you want to have these goals accomplished by? Having specific dates in mind will give you a will to want to complete these goals in that time frame.

WHO can you tell to help you hold yourself accountable? WHO can you tell these goals to that will help you reach these goals? Picking people that are supportive and can relate to your goals are going to be the best to help you reach your goals.

Step 1: The Vision

Describe the ultimate version of yourself. Where do you see yourself in 5 years inside and outside the gym? Where will the gym take you both physically in the gym and outside the gym? How and where would you spend your time? How will you know when you achieved your ultimate self?

Step 2: The Purpose (WHY)

Why is this important to you? List ALL of the reasons you want to achieve this version of you. What is your “why”? What drives you? Who motivates you? Are they intrinsic or extrinsic? What will this vision do for you? Why are you chasing it?

Step 3: Goals (HOW and WHEN)

Start with your 5 year goals and then go to your 1 year goals, and then finish with your 90 day goals. Be S.M.A.R.T. Choose 3 goals for each the 5 year, 1 year, and 90 day goals. Make sure they are relevant to each other.

Step 4: WHO

Who can you verbalize these goals to with helping you hold yourself accountable? Pick 3 people who will help you along the way and will support these goals.

Follow these steps and you will be more organized and will be able to manage the workload of accomplishing a goal. Leave this list somewhere where you will always see it. At Kazam, I'll keep a folder in the superpower sheet bins and you can always refer back to them. Remember, only YOU can accomplish these tasks, someone else can't do the work for you!
